Physical therapist

Kat Torre, DPT, CSCS

Purvi received her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Her research focused on shoulder adhesive capsulitis. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Rutgers University. Purvi has her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is certified in Advanced Functional Dry Needling.

Purvi has been practicing in the outpatient orthopedic setting for over 20 years. Her love of fitness and overall wellness led her to carve out a very specific niche and setting. Having practiced out of multiple high end gyms over the years, she was one of the first in DC to treat patients using a hands on, one-on-one approach—no aides or technicians! A concentration on manual therapy allows her to make a thorough evaluation, a complete and proper diagnosis, and a continual assessment of each patients needs throughout each session.

She started her career working at the Sports Physical Therapy Institute in New Jersey and the Georgetown University Sports Medicine Department. She then moved on to work as the senior physical therapist at the Sports Club/LA (now Equinox Sports Club), then launched SET Sports Physical Therapy in 2007, where she practiced as site director. In March 2013 Purvi founded and launched Pure Sports Physical Therapy, which was based out of Balance Gym in Glover Park. In December 2019, she relocated Pure Sports to the beautiful and new state of the art Reformation Fitness, which is located in the heart of Shaw, becoming the first physical therapist in Shaw!

Purvi specializes in sports medicine and orthopedics with a concentration in manual therapy, including advanced functional trigger point dry needling. Her primary interests include shoulder, hip, and knee injuries, as well as post-operative cases. She has attended numerous manual therapy courses through the North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy, Institute of Physical Art, McKenzie, Kinetacore, and Polestar Pilates.

Kat attended the University of Miami and received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy with Magna Cum Laude honors. Her doctorate thesis work focused on Pilates rehabilitation, specifically with spinal cord injuries. Prior to graduate school, she received her Bachelor of Science in Health Science from Georgetown University. Kat is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified Graston technique specialist, is certified in Functional Dry Needling and has her running coach certification through the Road Runners Club of Amercia (RRCA).

Kat has been an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist for over 10 years. She has been passionate about fitness since high school, which ultimately lead her to choose the path of Physical Therapy. Prior to attending PT school, she worked as a research assistant at Lombardi Cancer Center where her research focused on estrogen receptors with regards to breast cancer. During this time, she had a close family member undergoing intensive physical therapy and became fascinated with the profession. As a result, she switched her focus and went into Physical Therapy.

Prior to joining Pure Sports Physical Therapy, Kat has worked in several outpatient orthopedic settings and studied closely with a wide variety of orthopedic surgeons. Her career started in Dallas at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation where she worked closely with a hip preservation specialist and younger athletic patients. From there, Kat relocated back to the DC area and started working for the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle center. During this time she became a clinic manager and opened a new PT clinic in Rosslyn, VA. After working there for over 6 years, Kat made the transition to join Purvi and call Pure Sports Physical Therapy her new home!

Kat strongly believes in a hands on, manual therapy approach to treating dysfunction. Since no two people are the same, their movement patterns and injuries will not be either. Her specialties include hip, foot and ankle injuries, post-operative recovery and running injuries. Kat’s passion is returning patients to their sport, whether it’s getting an athlete back on the field or helping someone return to walking and prior functional levels.  Kat’s mission is to help each patient and continually adjust their treatment plan to meet specific needs during their course of PT. She combines manual therapy, functional trigger point dry needling, and a wide variety of exercises to achieve results.

Purvi combines great learning and skill with a hands-on, analytical approach to physical therapy.  She has patiently worked me (and my physicians) through a series of debilitating musculoskeletal issues, helping me recover from injuries while, at the same time, serving as an inspiring coach and cheerleader who keeps me going through the rough patches.  She is more than a skilled physical therapist because she has an instinct for how to facilitate healing while she inspires the patient to do what is needed to support the healing process.
